Spike is showing DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations" right now. They should
get the actors who played Kirk and Spock in that episode. They look
*exactly* like Shatner and McCoy.

He's too old!
This is stupid- if you are going to cast a bunch of 30 somethings, why
make it "star trek academy?" It doesn't make any sense. If you are
going the 30 something route, just recast the entire TOS crew and make
new TOS movies, forget about the star fleet academy gambit.

Take a look at most "teen" TV shows: Beverley Hills 90210, One Tree
Hill, Dawon's Creek, Joan of Arcadia, Smallville, etc. All the "teens"
and "twenty-something" characters are played by much older actors.
As long as they look and can act "young enough", the physical age of an
actor isn't hugely relevant.

Plus I thought that it would not be an 'academy' film, but something about
the early years?
Matt Damon... Wasn't he on 'Friends' or something?

Good eye, they ARE Shatner and Nimoy, the orriginal print was used with the
DS9 actors inserted via computer merging and printed over existing
supporting actors on the orriginal film. They had to duplicate several sets
based on the original blueprints and film footage as well.

Don't think he'd be any worse than any other names I've
seen tossed around. However, if they're going to try this
IMO they'd be better off doing it with all unknowns.

As of THE AVIATOR, Leonardo DiCaprio is picking up an aura of Sixties
Shatner.

Crossed with Forties Sinatra, true, but hey.

Better him, than some.
I might as well say here, now, that IMHO young Kirk should be
attractive, masculine, Caucasian, either light brown or dark blond hair,
muscular, apparently active (hyperactive?), and apparently
intelligent. He should have sex appeal. He should seem atypical and
creative.

While we are on the subject.... IMHO young Spock should be Caucasian,
but exotic. Dark hair, amazing eyes, sexy in a geeky kind of way. He
should be slim/muscular, and tall. He should seem elegant and cultured,
but capable of swift, bold action. He should be evidently very intelligent.

I watch ABC soaps, these guys are from One Life To Live, but I think
they'd be
great as Star Trek characters! :-)
Kirk: Dan Gauthier
http://a.abc.com/daytime/onelifetolive/images/gallery/oltl_g authier_1.jpg
Charming, bright, witty, scheming when needed, 'captain's
bearing'
McCoy: Tuc Watkins http://imdb.com/name/nm0914424/
He's cute, and he can do both comedy AND serious very well
Spock: Michael Easton http://bryan-brown.com/dte05show/pages/_MBB5523_lr.htm
He plays dark with a touch of mystery, and devilishness
in his eyes, I can see him as a Vulcan

Nah, Nimoy wasn't exactly a college kid when he got the part and after all
Spock is suppossed to be about 60 terran years old. He just ages slower due
to his mixed heritage.

IIRC Spock's 3 years older than Kirk in Terran years <g> I don't know if
that's canon, but if he was twice Kirk's age, his mom would be pretty dang
ancient in 'Journey to Babel' :)

You know what, knowing this actor from the past
several years, I think you're right! He *would*
make a good Klingon (but without those head
ridges, if they stuck to the original series).
But, that said, he's very good at brooding, and
I still think he'd make a very decent Spock.

In fact, that's probably necessary to avoid legal and political
controversy with romantic scenes. They can't have actual teenage
(minor) actors doing explicit love scenes (e.g., the TV movie
"All-American Girl"). And if hot sexy teen characters (like Savannah on
the TV series "Surface") were played by actual teen actors, they could
really be accused of exploiting teens. So the aforementioned Savannah
was played by Leighton Meester, who was 20 years old.
In this case, adult Kirk has a well-deserved reputation of being a
ladies' man. So if they want to show young Kirk's earliest sexual
exploits at Starfleet Academy, for example, they need to find an adult
actor to play those scenes.

Its weird - I didn't watch DS9 during its original broadcasts, but catching
some of the re-runs I'm beginning to see why so many people really liked.
But I still can't get past how silly it was to try to portray that skinny,
geeky, effeminate doctor as some kind of sex symbol.

No, he doesn't. There's nothing well-deserved about it. Kirk actually
isn't a ladies' man, even if some people percieve him to be.

Even if those that do, ARE ladies??
That would make the statement true, would it not?

Bashir as a sex symbol?
I never got that.

<snip>
In the case of young actors there is also a law about how much time
they can work without a break. That's partly why many shows that have a
baby character use twins - they can double the working time of the
character.

Well, he's only 26, but I still agree that he's too old to play Kirk in the
Academy days. Early voyages, maybe.

I like the idea of showing him in his first encounters with e.g., Ruth,
Ariel, Carol, etc. etc., but if they are going to set the story in the
academy days, I think it would be better to select an actor closer to 20
rather than to 30.

I agree with you, but not about Carol or Ruth. Given Kirk's probable
age in Star Trek II, I doubt he impregnated Carol when they were
teenagers at Starfleet Academy. More likely he was already a young ensign.
And the Ruth that Kirk remembered (who the amusement park planet
replicated) was already an adult woman. That's why I said "sexual
exploits" rather than "affairs of the heart." The women Kirk remembers
are the adult love affairs he's had. I'm sure he wasn't a virgin by the
time he graduated from Starfleet Academy, but it was probably a
one-night stand to further his sex education, that's all.

Oops. I must have forgotten to carry the one. He's 36, not 26. So, you're
right, he's way too old to play Kirk at the academy.
